Cash Machine Facts and Figures
- Cash machines supply 72% of all cash to individuals. 96.9% of all withdrawals, and 97.5% of cash withdrawn were from free-to-use cash machines.
- The total value of all withdrawals from cash machines reached £193 billion in 2009 – an average of £6,114 per second.
- The number of cash machine withdrawals increased by 1.4% in 2009 - the lowest recorded rate of growth - on the previous year, reaching 2.9 billion.
- The average value of a withdrawal from a bank or building society machine was £67, compared with £52 from an independently owned machine.
- There were 62,192 cash machines by the end of 2009, a decrease of 2.7% on 2008.
- 92% of all withdrawals were from cash machines owned by banks and building societies.
- The number of cash machines owned by independent ATM deployers (IADs) amounted to 26,263 at the end of 2009; this represented a 42% share of the market (5 down on 2007).
- Overall, there were 34.7 million regular users of cash machines in 2009. Each of these users withdrew approximately £200 every fortnight in three withdrawals.
